For instance, over a two-week period it is possible to combine a stay in Funchal with a rural retreat, or combine a number of properties as part of a fly-drive itinerary. It is also possible to combine a stay on Madeira with a holiday on the Portuguese mainland or a stay in the Azores.
Madeira and the Azores
The Azores form an enchanting archipelago of nine emerald green islands set in the Atlantic Ocean between Portugal (1,500km) and North America (3,900km).The volcanic formation of the islands has endowed them with a spectacular natural beauty. Vast craters, nurturing glistening blue lakes, sheer black cliffs falling into the ocean, lush rolling valleys and hot mineral springs combine to form a truly diverse scenery found nowhere else in the world.
TAP Portugal operate a direct flight between Funchal and Ponta Delgada (Sao Miguel) once weekly on a Saturday or daily flights between the two islands via Lisbon. Both islands are gifted with good walking trails, an abundance of flowers and beautiful scenery so why not consider a twin centre combining Madeira and Sao Miguel? Nick Heathcote, for 17 years a BBC television executive producer, is one of a handful of British who live in the Azores. Captivated by the islands following a whistle-stop taxi tour from the QE2 which docked in Sao Miguel for half a day in 1997, he decided to settle in Caloura and bought a small, 160 year old “Adega” set within 7,500 square meters of hillside land and only a short stroll from the tiny fishing harbour of Caloura. Using local craftsmen and stonemasons, the property, including the original wine press, has been fully restored and enhanced to an extremely high standard. Recommended.
