Romania has to be explored by self-drive car because each region is very different and has so much to show. The roads are slow, not because they are unmade but because they are very similar to UK ‘B’ roads and are therefore narrow, especially on the main roads if there is freight traffic of any volume.
There are no motorways in Romania, other than a small stretch of about 50 miles from Slobozia – en-route from the Black Sea coast – to Bucharest. The lack of motorways is quite a conversation topic in Romania and rumour has it that the first motorway will be ready within 5 years of EU membership.
However, Romanian drivers have better road manners than those of many other European countries and, if you have driven in Portugal or Italy, then driving in Romania will be no different. Our fly-drive holidays begin in Brasov after a transfer on arrival from Bucharest airport and the first overnight in Brasov. This will make it easier because you will have had the opportunity to acclimatise to a new destination and Brasov is much smaller than Bucharest and its environs. Cars can then either be left back in Brasov or at Bucharest airport.
A few of the driving times are long and will take most of the day but these are interesting itineraries with much to see on the way and what there is to be seen from the car window en route from one destination to the next is very much part of the holiday.
