The Azores archipelago is formed of the upper sections of volcanoes, at the junction of the North American, African and Eurasian plates. Sao Miguel, the largest island of the archipelago, was once two islands as evidenced by the two large volcanic massifs at each end (Picos da Vara in the east and Sete Cidades in the west) and the low central area (Agua de Pau) that emerged later from the sea following further eruptions. Theoldest part and highest point, in the eastern massif, is Pico da Vara at 1,105m.
There are four caldeiras, the famous Sete Cidades in the west which began around 290,000 years ago, Fogo in the centre which last eruptedin 1563, the very beautiful Furnas caldeira and finally the much erodedPovoacao caldeira in the east. We would like to invite you to experience the Geological History Tour, expertly escorted by an enthusiastic English speaking Geologist, that will provide a unique insight into these stunning green islands and, hopefully, give you a new and clear perspective of just how these diverse landscapes were
formed. A unique opportunity to learn the secrets of this volcanic archipelago.
See, touch and learn, in a fun and entertaining day trip around Sao Miguel, how these wonderful geological structures were created.
